Trail Planner
DEPARTMENT: Planning + Design Department
REPORTS TO: Design Project Manager
SUMMARY:
Rock Solid Trail Contracting is growing our planning team to meet our clients’ needs and is looking for a qualified candidate to join us. The Trail Planner will be involved in our natural surface trails projects, and must understand the form, function and construction of modern trails.
The Trail Planner will be involved in preparing trail concepts and designs for our client’s projects. ArcGIS proficiency is preferred, as is a background in the trail building and outdoor recreation planning industries.
This position is based in our office in Bentonville, AR, and will require traveling up to 50% of the time.
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Trail Planning and Design
· Use ArcGIS to create and edit project GIS data with guidance from the planning team
· Understands where to source publicly-available GIS data from, and responsible for keeping project data organized
· Prepare mapping tools for trail surveys, assemble planning and design base maps
· Assist planning staff with field data collection for trail concepts and designs, including survey by drone photogrammetry and hand measurements
· Knowledge of sustainable trail construction and experience planning trails for sustainable construction
· Familiar with trail building concepts, jargon, methods and challenges
· Experience operating in the field, with a team and independently, in variable conditions and terrain
· Has knowledge of geology, soils and hydrology and understanding of their impact on trail planning
· Has understanding of what field data is important to collect and document for trail planning
· Self-sufficient in the field, and able to plan for own needs on each project
· Physically capable of transporting tools and equipment through the backcountry, in varying weather conditions
· Capable of traveling independently, by car and plane, to client locations and completing assigned tasks in the budgeted time
· Demonstrated ability to meet internal and external deadlines, while meeting project quality expectations
· Solutions-based approach to problem solving
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
· Proficient in ArcGIS and Microsoft Office suite
· Experience in producing trail planning concepts and designs
· Experience completing field work in a team and solo, in remote locations, using GPS technology
· Experience in building modern mountain bike trails and mixed-use natural surface trails
· Experience traveling independently while managing a travel budget and own time to complete tasks
Minimum educational requirement of an AAS in GIS or related field, BS in an environmental science or engineering field preferred
