Bellingham, WA, USA Remote

May 10

Job Description

Freehub Media seeks an editor and journalist to fill a part-time role as Editorial Assistant for the company’s Freehub and Craft MTN magazine titles. In addition to assisting in production of both print titles, the ideal candidate will take a nuanced and quality-over-quantity approach to social media posting, as well as help grow web-based stories and initiatives.

We’re looking for someone with serious ambitions that transcend the ever-growing muddle of subjective infotainment—someone with a genuine desire to help improve the world through fact-based and research-intensive storytelling. The Editorial Assistant will work directly with our core crew of veteran journalists, designers and editors in a dynamic role that is ripe for learning and filled with substantial opportunities for career growth and advancement.

Every task assigned to the Editorial Assistant will factor directly into our final products and mirror the basic work of our editors. Duties will include editing copy ranging in length from longform features to email newsletters, coordinating written and photographic assignments with our global network of contributors, assisting with digital project execution and writing and scheduling thoughtful social media posts that highlight our ongoing work.

This role requires a distinct sense of journalistic integrity and keen attention to detail. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal communication skills, take a proactive approach to incoming projects and have a knack for writing clean, crisp and factually accurate copy in a deadline-driven environment.

Freehub Media is an independently owned outfit based in Bellingham, Washington. Our flagship title, Freehub, is a reader-oriented publication with the largest subscriber base among North American mountain bike magazines. Our tight-knit team works and plays hard together while maintaining a high degree of workplace professionalism. A deep love for cycling and a respect for the ever-growing outdoor community is a commonality between all staff members.

Desired Skill Set

- Proven ability to write with conciseness and authority on a wide range of subjects in a journalistic third-person style (samples of work published by an established media outlet are required, either through PDFs of print features or links to online articles).

- Experience editing a broad spectrum of articles, from the top editing/troubleshooting phase through to line editing and final copy edits.

- Social media and internet savvy, particularly with Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

- Strong research, fact-checking and interviewing skills, with a focus on thoroughness and accuracy.

- A degree in journalism/communications, or equivalent internship/professional experience.

- Confident command of AP style and English grammar.

- Self-starter with a positive attitude who can work independently as well as in a group.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Adobe InCopy, Adobe Acrobat, Zoom and Google G-Suite.

- Basic photo-editing skills such as image sizing, minor color corrections and metadata organization are a huge advantage but not required.

- A passion for cycling and the outdoors, with an appreciation for the arts and individual craftsmanship.
